This remarkable c.1882 Victorian Family Holy Bible is far more than an antique religious volume—it is a surviving piece of American family history. Published by O. A. Browning & Co. of Toledo, Ohio and Potter, Chase & Co. of Kansas City, Missouri, this impressive edition contains the Authorized New Testament of A.D. 1611 and the Revised Version of A.D. 1881 arranged in parallel columns, together with a complete concordance, Apocrypha and Psalms. Its elaborate dark leather binding is richly embossed with biblical scenes and striking gilt decoration typical of the grand family Bibles displayed in late-19th-century American homes.
What makes this example particularly special is the archive preserved within its pages. Generations of handwritten births, marriages and deaths remain inside, together with an original 1904 Anderson County, Texas marriage certificate, additional family papers, period newspaper material and a handmade crocheted cross bookmark. Rather than an empty antique Bible, this volume preserves the history of an actual American family across generations.
