Remarkable antique Victorian/Edwardian bathing costume, dating approximately to the 1890s or early 1900s, in black cotton with black-and-cream striped trim. The nautical design features a blousy top, short sleeves, defined waist and distinctive asymmetric front, with the striped trim beautifully outlining the garment’s construction.
Beyond its appeal as a genuine piece of early swimwear and fashion history, this piece is surprisingly modern looking and wearable—it could just as easily be styled as a little black dress with tights and boots as displayed as part of an antique textile or costume collection.
Especially notable is its excellent condition. The black cotton remains strong and richly colored, with no staining, holes or tears observed, and the contrasting striped trim has wonderful visual impact. Upon careful inspection, we could only find very minor indications of age: some faint discoloration to the trim.
Best fit likely modern size 6. Snap front. Cotton fabric has little stretch. Shoulder to shoulder is 16 inches, chest is 42 inches, waist is 26 inches and hips are approximately 36 inches. Waist to hem is 18 1/2 inches, and shoulder to hem measures 36 1/2 inches long. Cat not included, although he is looking for a home!
