Antique European devotional wall crucifix, measuring approximately 16" tall by 10" wide. Features an elaborately carved and layered wooden cross with a detailed gold-tone metal Corpus Christi, applied scroll-form INRI plaque, and skull/memento mori motif beneath Christ's feet.
The unusual deeply carved geometric decoration gives the cross a wonderful folk-art character. The skull represents Golgotha ("Place of the Skull") and is a traditional symbol encountered on antique Catholic crucifixes.
Believed to be French or Continental European and dating approximately to the late 19th or very early 20th century. Constructed from multiple carved wooden elements with separately applied metal devotional figures and fittings.
Shows substantial authentic age, surface wear, patina, old nail holes, finish loss and other imperfections consistent with age and devotional use. Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the condition description.
