Antique 19th century coopered wooden oval tub with metal bands. Built the old way by a cooper, with vertical hardwood staves shaped to curve inward and held tight by dark metal hoops top and bottom, planed and fitted by hand so the joints sit snug.
Tubs like this were everyday workhorses in 19th century kitchens, laundries, and gardens, used to hold water, wash small items, and carry goods. Today they are prized as primitive farmhouse decor: use it as a planter with a liner, a wine or beverage cooler for gatherings, a kindling holder by the fireplace, or a rustic magazine and blanket bin.
The tub measures approximately 11.5 inches long and 7 inches tall. The wood shows a rich aged patina with scuffs and wear consistent with genuine age and use, exactly what primitive collectors want to see. The metal bands are dark with age and the whole piece is solid and sturdy.
Coopered woodenware is getting harder to find in this condition, and oval tubs in this size are the sweet spot for decorating. Please study all photos carefully since they are part of the description, and feel free to ask any questions before buying.
