Antique 19th Century Uzbek Adras Ikat Silk Cotton Dress Kurta Central Asian:
$995.00

Exceptional antique Central Asian / Uzbek ikat dress or tunic, probably dating to the late 19th century, approximately c. 1880–1900.

This is an unusually dramatic example, woven in saturated shades of magenta, aubergine purple, pink, ochre, blue, and gold, with enormous circular floral or medallion-like motifs and bold flame-like geometric bands.

The garment is traditionally constructed in an extremely generous, loose T-shaped form with straight sleeves and a long slit neckline. It is assembled from narrow loom-width sections of ikat fabric with extensive hand-sewn construction visible at the neckline, seams, and hem.

The cloth has the slightly crisp, dry hand associated with adras ikat, traditionally woven with a silk warp and cotton weft. Fiber content has not been scientifically tested, so this attribution is based on the appearance, feel, and construction of the textile.

The extraordinary 70-inch chest measurement reflects the traditional unfitted cut and should not be interpreted to correspond to a modern clothing size. Shoulder to hem measures 43 inches and sleeves are 17 inches long.

Very good antique condition overall and remarkably complete for its age. There are numerous scattered pinpoint to very small holes throughout the garment, somewhat more noticeable on the back (please see last two photographs), along with a few small spots/stains (example 15th photograph), and minor age-related wear and loose stitching. There is no significant shattering, and the textile remains structurally sound and wearable. Interior seam and hem is illustrated in 14th photograph.

A spectacular surviving example of Central Asian ikat textile art with exceptional color and scale. Equally compelling as a collectible historic garment, textile study piece, or dramatic wall display.
