For your consideration is a beautiful, genuine antique Kerala Nettoor Petti (Wedding Dowry Box) from South India. Crafted from deep-toned, aged rosewood, this traditional box is adorned with elaborate, ornate brass fittings and inlay.
These boxes were historically gifted to brides for storing jewelry and prized textiles. This particular example features heavy brass strapping, protective corner plates, decorative side handles, and a striking central repoussé emblem. The pointed, pyramid-style lid is classic to the Kerala design.
A rare and desirable feature of this piece is the interior: it includes a smaller, nested, 3 1/2 x 9 lidded 3 inch deep, interior rosewood compartment (see photos).
Dimensions (Approximate):
Width: 14 inches
Depth: 10 inches
Height: 9 inches
Condition Report:As an authentic antique, this piece shows signs of its significant history and age. It is being sold in As-Is condition, which adds to its character but requires attention.
Crucial Note: There is a significant split/crack in the rosewood plank running horizontally across the rear slope of the lid (visible clearly in photos).
Locks: The main hasp latches securely, but there is NO KEY included. (The internal lock mechanism is present).
General Wear: The rosewood has a deep patina with scattered scratches, nicks, and dings throughout. The brass fittings are tarnished with oxidation consistent with age, and several areas show wear to the inlay/strapping.
Please examine all photos carefully as they form the primary description of the condition. This is a magnificent, highly-collectible restoration project or a dramatic \"as-found\" display piece.
