This is the first standalone Thomas Tegg edition of R.A. Davenport's "The History of the Bastile, and of its Principal Captives," printed in London in 1839. Davenport was one of the few English authors to attempt a full history of the infamous French state prison, covering its medieval origins through the storming in 1789, with profiles of notable captives including Voltaire and the Man in the Iron Mask. The steel-engraved frontispiece shows the siege of the Bastille with a caption in the plate. Half-leather spine with five raised gilt-tooled panels, marbled paper boards, and hand-marbled endpapers in the characteristic peacock-comb pattern. 464 pages. Thomas Tegg at 73 Cheapside was one of Victorian London's most prolific popular publishers, known for affordable editions of serious histories. A solid survivor from the first generation of popular English-language histories of the French Revolution.
