Antique/Vintage Oil Painting – Portrait of a Cat – Signed – Ornate Gilt Frame ( FRENCH SCHOOL - Early XX (1926) )
Charming and expressive original oil painting depicting a cat ( "Rimbaud" Le Cat ) wearing a red collar or scarf, presented against a deep, dark background.
The cat is beautifully modeled with expressive green eyes, carefully rendered fur and strong contrast between the light-colored animal and the dark background. The painting has a distinctive traditional character and would make an attractive addition to a collection of animal paintings, antique-style interiors, or feline artwork.
The work is signed in the lower left corner, although the signature is somewhat difficult to decipher. There is also a small inscription/signature in the upper right area. No artist attribution is being made.
The painting is housed in a particularly attractive ornate gilt and dark-toned decorative frame, featuring elaborate raised floral and foliate ornamentation. The frame adds considerable character to the piece and is an important part of the presentation.
The work displays stylistic characteristics associated with late 19th- and early 20th-century European painting, including strong tonal contrasts, a dark ground, compressed pictorial space and visible painterly brushwork reminiscent of the transition toward modernist area: approximately 10" × 10" ( Area painting unframed )
Overall framed size: approximately 13" × 13" ( Area painting framed )Condition
Vintage/antique condition consistent with age and previous display. The painting shows surface wear, age-related characteristics and some areas of finish variation. The ornate frame also shows age-related wear, patina and minor imperfections. Please examine all photographs carefully, as the photographs form part of the description.
This is an original painted artwork, not a modern printed reproduction.
A very decorative and unusual small-scale animal portrait, particularly appealing because of its expressive subject, visible signature and elaborate period-style frame.
