Pictured is an antique Victorian gold-filled photograph locket with original Cival War era tintype portrait.
Civil War era / mid-to-late 19th century.
Large round locket measuring approximately 1 5/8" diameter, excluding suspension ring.
Weight: 20.4 grams.
Exterior features finely engine-turned geometric decoration with concentric circular design.
Opens to reveal an original antique tintype portrait of an unidentified gentleman.
Microscopic examination clearly shows the photograph is produced on a thin metal plate, consistent with the historic tintype / ferrotype photographic process.
Photographic style, clothing and locket construction are consistent with approximately the 1860s–1870s.
Tintype remains housed beneath the protective cover with its dark textured surround.
XRF detected approximately 14.99% gold at the tested surface over a predominantly copper-based alloy and indicated possible layered/plated construction.
Consistent with period gold-filled or gold-covered jewelry.
Original tintype has age-related surface marks, scratches and wear but the portrait remains readily visible.
Hinge is intact and locket opens and closes.
