Antique Copy Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin Hardcover For Sale

This is an early edition (1925+) of Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin,and itis undated. The copyright page only states printed in U.S.A. The title page indicates that it was published by Caxton House, Inc., which began in 1925. It is the same edition as 1874.
The original publication was written in French in 1791. It was first published in English in 1868, and in an 1874 edition, Franklin's correspondence was included. The current edition includes the correspondence.
Franklin completed the original handwritten manuscript in 1757 on his 51st birthday. After Benjamin's death, William Temple Franklin, his grandson, took the manuscript to France, and it was first published in French in 1791.It was later published in English in1868 by John Bigelow who used Franklin's original manuscript, not the French translation. The manuscript had been lost for some time. William Temple Franklin sold it to John Bigelow for 25,000 francs. Bigelow incorporated Franklin's correspondence and re-published the autobiography in 1874.
The book has 220 pages and includes "A Historical Sketch of the Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Autographed Manuscript" , a description of Part I (p. 49), The Autobiography (p. 52). Page 202 terminates the autobiography published by William Temple Franklin and his successors, including Bigelow. Page 203 begins Franklin's autobiography written in the last year of his life (pp. 203-206). The Appendix begins on p. 207. These page numbers may help readers and collectors as there was no table of contents in this edition. Shuffling the pages was the only way to identify its parts.The condition is good. Binding is strong and pages are age-toned but unmarked. There is no dust jacket, and books of this era may not have had DJ's. The spine is faded, but the title is in gilded letters and decorative patterns are legible along the spine. The front board is beige cloth with some stains and a small nick on the upper edge. The back board has the same nick on the upper edge. There is some writing in the text. Mrs Taylor, (myself) previously a teacher who owns this edition, shared it with high school students. Her name and classroom number are listed on the inside front board, along with another signature of a previous owner. The pages in the text proper are not marked. On the bottom edge of the text block, TAYLOR is written. The edges of the spine are a bit ragged from shelfwear and handling.

This rare book makes a fine collector's find, and it is very sturdy and readable as well.
