Antique Derby King St Mansion House Dwarf Figurine Mr Slipperly Sampson Hancock:
$450.00

DescriptionAdd a premier piece of English ceramic history to your collection with this genuine antique porcelain figurine. This piece portrays a classic "Mansion House Dwarf" modeled with exaggerated, comical features, a round protruding belly, and a massive, wide-brimmed pink and teal hat. A simulated paper broadside banner is draped across the front of his hat reading: "Unredeemed Pledges to be sold by sale by Mr. Slipperly." He wears a harlequin-patterned diamond vest under a yellow waistcoat, framed by a purple sash and a grassy mound base. The back of his waistcoat features a finely detailed, hand-painted miniature vignette depicting three pocket watches hanging next to a bracket clock, a goblet, and open watch keys on a display counter. The unglazed porcelain underside features the authentic hand-painted puce Stevenson & Hancock / Sampson Hancock factory mark.Historically, this piece was produced at the famous King Street factory in Derby, England, which operated independently to keep the legendary mid-18th-century Duesbury traditions alive. Beginning in 1863, the workshop utilized this specific crown and crossed batons mark flanked by the letters "S" and "H" to denote their highly collectible, hand-decorated character figures. Modeled after real-life 18th-century individuals who stood outside London’s Mansion House wearing oversized hats to display sale notices, this rare survivor beautifully captures the theatrical charm and satirical street culture of historic England.Item Specifics
