Very good antique condition with naturally aged patina, oxidation, darkened areas, surface scratches, rubbing and minor irregularities consistent with age and use. Please review all photos carefully.
Exceptional antique English hammered brass helmet coal scuttle with a dramatic sculptural profile and beautifully aged finish.
The scuttle features a tall movable carrying handle, a smaller rear handle, copper-toned rivets and three raised bands around the base. The hammered brass surface has developed a rich natural patina with warm gold, bronze and smoky darkened areas.
Marked “MADE IN ENGLAND” on the handle fitting.
Closely comparable English examples are commonly attributed to the late Victorian and early 20th-century period. The exact date and maker of this piece are unknown.
Originally used beside a coal-burning fireplace, it now makes a striking decorative accent for a Victorian, Gothic, Old World or Dark Academia interior. It may also be displayed with kindling, rolled papers or dried botanicals.
