An original antique etching and drypoint, portrait of Sir Gilbert Scott (1811–1878), one of the most prolific and celebrated architects of the Victorian era, etched by Anna Lea Merritt (1844–1930) after a painting by George Richmond RA (1809–1896), dated 1879 — the year following Scott's death.
Sir Gilbert Scott was the pre-eminent Gothic Revival architect of 19th-century Britain, responsible for some of the most iconic buildings of the age: the Albert Memorial, the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station, Glasgow University, and the restoration of dozens of English cathedrals. Catalogue reference: Gorokhoff 256, No. 7. Pencil number 25 below the plate mark indicates a limited edition impression. Artist's signature, monogram, date, and title are etched directly in the plate.
Anna Lea Merritt was an American-born British painter and printmaker, best known for her celebrated painting Love Locked Out (1890, Tate Britain).
