A Pond at Dusk with the Town Beyond

On the far horizon, past the water and the reeds, the painter has put in a town with chimneys standing against the last of the light. Barbizon pictures are usually clear of all that, and here the edge of the city is allowed into the view, a few strokes wide. Two figures stand at the water, one of them in red, and the sky takes up half the canvas. On the back, the number 6995 is stencilled into the bare wood of the stretcher.
