An absolutely beautiful antique French jeweled lady's miniature box, clearly stamped MADE IN FRANCE on the underside and appearing to remain remarkably original.
The ornate gilt metal box is covered with wonderfully detailed raised scroll, floral and beaded decoration and set with vivid cobalt blue and ruby-pink glass cabochons along with tiny seed-pearl accents.
The centerpiece is especially beautiful — a domed hand-painted floral enamel decoration beneath glass, with delicate pink roses and tiny blue flowers against an intense cobalt blue ground. It truly has the appearance of a miniature piece of antique jewelry.
Opening the box reveals its original mirror and divided gilt interior. Small French ladies' boxes of this general type were made for a variety of personal uses, including beauty patches, pastilles/cachous, pills and other tiny necessities.
One particularly intriguing detail is that the interior of this box still has a distinct perfume/fragrance scent. Whether this relates to its original contents cannot be determined, but together with the divided interior it adds a wonderful bit of mystery to its history. I have made no attempt to clean or alter the interior.
The box measures approximately 2 1/4" long by 1 1/2" wide. Please see the ruler photographs for exact dimensions.
Condition:
In great antique condition, especially considering its age, and appears to be all original. The floral enamel remains wonderfully colorful and the blue and pink glass cabochons retain beautiful color. The gilt metal has its naturally aged, untouched patina with expected surface wear and darkening.
One of the tiny seed-pearl accents appears imperfect or possibly missing. Interestingly, there is a loose little seed pearl still inside the box, which may be the original pearl from that setting. It will remain with the box exactly as found.
The original interior mirror has age-related spotting and deterioration to the silvering, appropriate to an antique piece. Hinge is intact and the box opens and closes tight. Please enlarge all photographs, as they show the condition and remarkable detail very well.
A wonderful antique French lady's vanity accessory combining hand-painted enamel, jewel-like glass cabochons, seed pearls, an original mirror and an unusually elaborate gilt metal case. Its tiny scale, beautiful original decoration and lingering perfume fragrance make this a particularly charming survivor.
