Up for sale is a beautiful and historically fascinating antique French patriotic commemorative cross, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1918.
This unusual piece is crafted from silver-plated metal and features a striking combination of Christian symbolism, French patriotic sentiment, and delicate Art Nouveau-style floral decoration.
The cross is surmounted by a beautifully detailed anchor entwined with a rope, traditionally representing hope, faith, and perseverance. The front is decorated with an elegant floral composition consisting of three elongated seed pods, delicate flowers, and gracefully curved stems and leaves, all executed in fine relief.
Of particular historical interest are the inscriptions FRANCE, ALSACE, and LORRAINE, appearing on the three seed pods. These refer to the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, territories lost to Germany following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871.
The composition can be interpreted as a patriotic expression of France\'s enduring attachment to these territories and the hope for their eventual return. The anchor above the cross reinforces this symbolism of hope and perseverance.
The piece most likely dates to the period between the Franco-Prussian War and the end of the First World War in 1918, making it an interesting historical collectible associated with French national identity and remembrance.
The cross comes in a beautiful antique presentation box with a purple velvet interior and silk-lined lid, bearing the original gold-lettered inscription “GRANDS MAGASINS DU LOUVRE – PARIS.” This was one of the most prestigious Parisian department stores of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The cross is well preserved, with an attractive aged silver patina and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The presentation box shows considerable wear to its original silk lining, including tears and losses, but retains its historical charm and the important Parisian retailer\'s inscription.
