Rare original late-19th-century S.F. Cody French admission ticket booklet, containing an impressive 94 tickets still together in the original booklet. The tickets advertise Samuel Franklin Cody (S.F. Cody) as “Champion Cavalier du Monde Entier” (“Champion Horseman of the World”). Each ticket features a striking portrait of Cody in his Western-style hat, together with revolvers, a target, horseshoe, riding equipment and other decorative imagery. The tickets are marked “Une Entrée – IIme Place” for one second-class admission.Samuel Franklin Cody (1867–1913) was an American-born showman, horseman and sharpshooter who became a major attraction in Europe. During the 1890s he toured France and elsewhere in Western Europe, staging equestrian exhibitions, shooting demonstrations and famous horse-versus-cyclist competitions. He later became an important pioneer of British aviation. The identification of these tickets is supported by the Autry Museum of the American West, whose Samuel Franklin Cody Collection specifically records French S.F. Cody ticket books titled “Champion Cavalier du Monde Entier.” The museum collection also preserves Cody’s French programs, posters and other material associated with his European performances during the 1890s. This example is particularly appealing because 94 original tickets have survived together, rather than as individual detached tickets. They remain bound within their original period booklet. The tickets retain their attractive pink/red paper and detailed period printing. The outer booklet/cover shows substantial age and storage wear, including tears, losses, lifting paper and other deterioration. The ticket block itself remains together and presents very well for its age. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition.A wonderful piece of 1890s Wild West, equestrian, circus, sporting and entertainment ephemera, as well as an unusual artifact relating to a man who would later become a significant figure in early aviation.Original period item — not a reproduction.
