Antique 19th Century French Oval Spring Dynamometer - Régnier-Type Traction/Pressure Gauge
Offered here is a genuine antique dynamometer, made in Paris in the mid-1800s. This is a mechanical force-measuring instrument descended from the design pioneered by French engineer Edme Régnier around 1798 - the first practical portable dynamometer, used to measure pulling (traction) and pressing (pression) force via a tempered steel oval spring.
The instrument features a fan-shaped steel dial engraved \"ECHELLE DE TRACTION\" and \"ECHELLE DE PRESSION\" (traction scale / pressure scale), with a graduated scale reading from K=0 upward. A stamped \"12\" appears on the reverse of the dial plate, likely a maker\'s model/reference number for this particular scale variant. The mechanism is fully intact - center pivot, needle, and geared reset assembly all present and functioning.
A well-preserved example of an important instrument in the history of scientific measurement - the Régnier-style dynamometer was used throughout the 19th century in engineering, physiology, and early anthropometric research. A strong addition to any collection of antique scientific or precision instruments.
Details:Origin: Paris, FranceDate: Mid-19th century (estimated at 1840—1880)Material: Steel, with brass/steel dial mechanismMarkings: \"ECHELLE DE TRACTION,\" \"ECHELLE DE PRESSION,\" \"K=0,\" stamped \"12\" on reverseDimensions: 4.75\" x 2.25\" x 0.625\" | 120.65 mm x 57.15 mm x 15.875 mmCondition: Excellent for age; working order; natural patina, no damage
Condition:Genuine age-appropriate patina throughout the steel surfaces, consistent with an instrument of this age. No losses, breaks, or repairs. The spring retains its tension and the dial mechanism works exactly as designed - flexing the oval spring smoothly deflects the needle across the scale, which then resets correctly.
