Antique German Porcelain Character Beer Stein Drunken Man in Barrel c.1910s-1920s

This amazing beer stein belongs to the "character" stein family - beer steins made in form of things or persons. This is probably the most collectible category of antique beer steins.

The stein is made in the form of a barrel with a man sitting on top of it, almost submerging inside of it with a beer stein and tobacco pipe in his hands. His head and body form the lid, his feet are molded in the body of the stein. The stein is made of very fine porcelain-quality stoneware called by Germans "Ivory stoneware." The inscription reads:

"Saufst stirbst
Saufst net stirbst a
also Saufst!"

It is written in Bavarian dialect and means:

"If you drink, you die
If you don't drink, you die
so drink!"

There is no mark on the bottom and we don't know who made it. But the stein is well known to the collectors. It was described in Manusov's book "Encyclopedia of Character Steins." Judging by the pewter it was made in late 1910s - early 1920s.

The stein is in excellent condition. No damage, no repairs. The lid fits perfectly. It is 7" tall, 0.5L capacity. Reference#:   Condition: Excellent Year:1910s - 1920s Country: Germany Height: 7 in Materials: Pottery
