Antique Hand Painted Nippon Pheasant Platter 17" Maple Leaf Moriage Gold Japan For Sale

Dating to the Nippon era, approximately 1891–1921, this large Japanese export porcelain platter measures an impressive 17 inches across. The central scene depicts three pheasants among grasses and trees in a muted palette of greens, blues and warm earth tones, almost like a miniature sporting painting on porcelain.

The wide scalloped border is particularly beautiful. Delicate pink blossoms and pale green leaves wind across an intricate network of gilt branches, berries and foliage, with extensive raised gold detailing and a richly gilded rim. The combination of the naturalistic game-bird scene and elaborate decoration gives the platter wonderful depth and visual interest.

The reverse bears a blue maple leaf mark with “Nippon” and “Hand Painted,” consistent with Japanese porcelain produced for the export market during the Nippon period.

At 17 inches wide, this is a substantial display piece. It would be striking displayed on a sideboard or mantel, incorporated into a plate wall, or styled in an English country, traditional or hunt-country interior. The pheasant imagery also makes it especially appealing for collectors of sporting and game-bird decor.
