Antique J Prentice New York Surveyors Compass Brass w/ Wood Case Circa 1860 B8771
Offered for sale is an antique J. Prentice New York brass surveyor's compass, dating to approximately the mid-19th century, circa 1850–1875.
The silvered compass face is beautifully engraved “J. Prentice – New York” and features a finely graduated scale and an ornate decorative flourish. The instrument retains its compass needle, mounting socket and two spirit levels.
The compass measures approximately 12" long x 5" wide.
Included is the period fitted wooden storage/carrying box, measuring approximately 12.5" x 6.25". The box shows considerable age and use, including some wood damage. The hinges are missing, and the box should be considered in need of repair/restoration. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
The brass retains an attractive aged patina and has not been polished. The dial shows age-related discoloration, spotting and wear consistent with an instrument that is approximately 150+ years old.
The compass is working, but I have not professionally calibrated or tested the compass for surveying accuracy, so it is being sold as an antique collectible rather than a certified working surveying instrument.
A desirable piece of 19th-century American surveying, engineering and scientific-instrument history, particularly appealing to collectors of antique compasses, surveying equipment and early American-made instruments.
