Antique Japanese Black Lacquer Raden Mother of Pearl Inlaid Boxes – Pair
An attractive pair of small antique or vintage black lacquered boxes, probably Japanese, decorated with finely cut iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay (raden).
Both boxes feature traditional decorative mosaic work, each with a different design.
The first box has rounded ends and an elaborate geometric floral or star-shaped motif surrounded by a finely executed mother-of-pearl mosaic border.
The second box is rectangular with rounded corners, featuring a broad mother-of-pearl mosaic border and a small rectangular central inlay.
Both boxes have hinged lids and black lacquered interiors.
Origin: Probably Japan
Period: Possibly late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890–1920 (attribution unconfirmed)
Material: Presumed lacquered wood with mother-of-pearl inlay
Dimensions: Approximately 10 × 5 × 2.5 cm
