Antique Japanese Kutani Aochibu Vase Taniguchi Kinyodo Eight Views of Omi 6in For Sale

An exceptionally detailed Japanese Kutani porcelain vase bearing the Taniguchi Kinyodo mark. The deep blue-green aochibu ground is covered with ultra-fine, remarkably consistent dots, accented by flowing gilt scrollwork and stylized flowers. Eight finely painted landscape panels encircle the vase, each with its own composition and an inscription identifying the scene. The careful painting, precise details, and richly decorated ground make this a striking, high-quality piece. In our view, the artistry and workmanship are especially impressive on a vase of this compact size.

The Kutani/Taniguchi mark connects this vase with Taniguchi Kinyodo, an established Kutani porcelain house active from 1875 to 1957. Kinyodo worked with or provided an outlet for respected artists, including Matsumoto Sahei, and participated in the important export and exhibition trade of Japanese porcelain. The mark identifies the Kinyodo house; it does not name an individual painter.

The painted scenes represent Ōmi Hakkei, the Eight Views of Ōmi: celebrated landscapes around Lake Biwa in present-day Shiga Prefecture. Each scene captures a distinctive place and a moment of light, weather, or activity. Together, they form a poetic landscape cycle rather than a single sequential story.
