A very attractive antique Japanese cloisonné enamel vase, dating from the late Meiji period, circa 1890–1910.The vase is decorated with a continuous naturalistic landscape depicting elegant red-crowned cranes amongst thistle-like flowering plants, grasses and a winding stream. The finely worked wire outlines are particularly effective throughout the birds, foliage and water. The decoration is set against an unusual pale grey-white enamel ground with a softly speckled appearance, giving the vase a wonderfully understated palette. Pale turquoise, blue-grey, ochre and white enamels provide the colour, while the copper rim and foot complete the piece. The composition wraps continuously around the vase, with the principal group of cranes forming the main focal point to the front.Size:
18 cm // 7 inches approx heightCondition:
Antique condition with age-related wear. There is sone brusing most noticeably to the reverse and side, together with surface scratches, marks and general wear.Despite the faults, the vase displays very well and retains an especially attractive and finely detailed crane and floral design.
