This spectacular Wajima-nuri natural resin lacquerware features six exquisite libation bowls and two saucers. Its buoyant finish and mint condition are owed to a multi-layered application of urushi lacquer, and the brilliant gold surface was created through the maki-e technique, a process that involves sprinkling successive fine gold powder onto wet lacquer. This created the gold background for six finest polychrome designs, including a Paulownia (kiri 桐), Cherry Blossom (sakura 桜), chrysanthemum (kiku 菊), Bamboo (Take 竹), Maple (momiji 紅葉), and a butterfly (Cho Cho 蝶). All are luminous with a metallic, iridescent, and ethereal effect that changes with the light, in a stunning visual contrast against the gold. The unmatched superb artistry and elegant style are consistent with the prosperity and luxurious time in the late Meiji and early Taisho era (1912-26). Scratches and usage wear show on one saucer; all others are in excellent condition.
