Antique Japanese Meiji Seto Blue White Porcelain Vases – Elephant Handles 21cmDescription:
A garden is the theme with flowers, foliage and rockwork, cobalt against white, and the painter knew what he was doing. Dark leaves and blooms sit against softer washes of blue, giving the decoration depth rather than leaving it flat on the surface.
The white porcelain provides the light in the picture, which is why these vases reward being turned rather than viewed from one angle.
Each was painted freehand, so the flowers and foliage fall slightly differently on each vase – a nice reminder that they were decorated individually rather than as identical copies.
The necks carry moulded elephant-head handles, their trunks curling down to form the handles. They were left in plain white porcelain, standing out crisply against the blue decoration below.
A key-fret border runs around each flared rim, with further scrolling and floral decoration continuing down over the raised foot. Hold one to the light and the thinner porcelain of the neck becomes translucent; turn it over and you can see the wheel-finishing marks left during manufacture.

Condition: Very good antique condition overall. One vase has a small rim nick and fine hairline, both shown clearly in the close-up photographs so you can judge for yourself. There are small kiln-grit specks and firing marks to the unglazed feet.
The carved hardwood stands shown are included but aren't original to the vases.
