DESCRIPTION
Fine Meiji-period Japanese Satsuma charger, elaborately decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with extensive moriage raised enamel, jewelling and gilt decoration, depicting a Rakan (Arhat) in a mountainous landscape. He is shown as a bald figure with elongated earlobes and a benign expression, wearing an extraordinarily detailed robe covered with geometric and scrolling textile patterns. In front of him is a table with an offering vessel or censer, while the surrounding landscape includes a flowing stream, trees, and a distant mountain. The border consists of repeatedblue and dark floral images in a dark gilded field. The reverse is largely undecorated, showing a buff-colored satsuma body with a slightly raised foot.
CONDITION
Overall very good antique condition. Very heavy. No chips or evidence of repair. A small, non-penetrating 3" hairline, visible only from the back, possibly a glaze fissure. Colors bright and unfaded (all visible in the images).
