Antique miniature portrait depicting The Frankland Sisters (Marianne and Amelia Frankland, daughters of Sir Thomas Frankland, originally painted by British artist John Hoppner in 1795 and housed in the National Gallery of Art). Hand-painted with some applied transfer. Small spaniel dog rests at their feet. This miniature reproduction, which measures 4x5 inches and has its original beveled glass, was widely created in Europe from the late 19th century into the early 20th century as keepsake souvenirs for travelers visiting prominent art museums. The portrait is housed in a rectangular bone-inlaid panel frame, featuring a dark wood body bordered with segmented strips of polished bovine bone to create a striking contrast. The images are on celluloid (not ivory), as verified by a longtime LA saleeer 27 years ago.
