Features: "Thistle" / Spiked Bottom & Intricate Fancy Porcupine Curls
Origin: Great Lakes / Woodland Region (Anishinaabe / Ho-Chunk Traditions)
Estimated Era: Late 19th to Mid-20th Century
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Up for sale is a magnificent, masterfully crafted Native American black ash
(brown ash) splint "fancy basket" originating from the Great Lakes / Woodland
weaving traditions. Found locally in Michigan, this piece showcases exceptional
artistry and traditional tribal techniques.
KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS:
- Spiked / Thistle Bottom: Features beautifully hand-shaped triangular feet
along the lower base rim. This protective functional foot elevates the bowl
and protects the delicate underside from surface wear.
- Fancy Curlicues & Rim: The mid-section boasts prominent, overlapping
curlicues (often called porcupine twists or thistle loops). The top rim
is finished with an elegant, alternating loop-twisted treatment.
- Construction: The interior features a clean, radiating spoke foundation with
tightly woven plaiting, indicative of highly skilled Great Lakes master weavers.
CONDITION REPORT:
Excellent antique/vintage condition. The structural integrity is outstanding with no
major breaks, missing splints, or unravelling to the body or feet. The ash splints
have aged beautifully to a rich, warm natural honey-brown patina. The basket retains
its crisp, rigid shape. Please review all high-resolution photos to appreciate the
fine craftsmanship and exact condition details.
