This exceptional antique Native American fully beaded baby vest, crafted by the Lakota Sioux in the early 1900s to 1910s, is a rare example of Plains tribal artistry and functionality. Made from soft brain-tan buckskin leather, this vest features intricate glass seed beadwork in vibrant geometric patterns, reflecting the cultural significance and meticulous craftsmanship of Lakota artisans during this period. The symmetrical beadwork, rendered in bold colors such as blue, red, green, and white, is arranged in diamond and border designs that are emblematic of Lakota artistry.

This vest came from the collection of my late father, Gary Grouse, a foremost expert in antique Native American art and crafts and Native American Historian. He specialized in Plains tribes beadwork but collected extensively across the U.S. from the 1960s to the early 2000s. While I don’t have formal purchase records, his expertise ensured careful selection and authenticity. He always identified and documented the tribal affiliation and period each piece was made.
