EXTREMELY RARE

Made by the Herculaneum Pottery Company of Liverpool England, circa 1832. This piece is not marked with a maker on the underside, but it is part of a matched lot of 2 of the same pattern, the other piece [a plate] which was marked

VERY EARLY Transferware of the Georgian Period

Size approx. 7.25\" long from handle to handle, 5\" wide, and 5.75\" tall with lid. Without lid, the base is 4.5\" high.

Pattern is fabulous- a landscape scene of 2 extremely well dressed ladies in Georgian attire, practicing archery. They have bows and arrows in hand and are standing next to a river. Background landscape of trees, a grand manor house, and a small sailboat.

The artwork showing the Lady Archers is shown twice on the tureen body.

Border of tiny scalloped circles, dots, twining leaves, and flowers

The body shape is a scalloped oval on 4 embossed feet. There are embossed handles at each end, with a shell-like formation at the top of the handle and a large molded flower beneath. Handle of lid is embossed with a circlet of leaves.

Scalloped rim edge to base. Lid has a small hole for steam to escape, as this piece would have been a small sized soup tureen.

This is an EXTREMELY RARE pattern- I have only seen one which was remotely similar [not identical] in 15+ years. A remarkable example of antique transferware. Colors are deep chocolate brown with shadings and variations on the brown tones. See all pics and use zoom.

Excellent antique condition, absolutely NO nicks chips cracks scratches damage fading or repairs other than some very fine crazing and a small zigzag crack line INSIDE the piece. The crack line is feelable on the outside, but has not darkened on the outside surface so is extremely difficult to see. Some very fine chips to glazed enamel finish around the inside of rim, normal for the piece having a lid placed on/off for almost 200 years. Some light surface wear to edge of one of the handles. NO CHIPS TO POTTERY.See all pics and use zoom. No signs of wear to pattern. Amazing for age.
