Antique Oil Painting Portrait after Dutch Old Master artist Franz Hals \"Portrait of a Gentleman of the de Wolff family\". This painting is the artist A. Hiller\'s interpretation of the original, which was painted in 1643; the sitter noted as possibly Joost de Wolff born around 1576, who appears in our version to be quite a character. I have included Christie\'s sale posting of the original for reference, shown last photo.
Signed lower left A. Hiller and dated lower left, 1895 or 1905 (partially obscured by the frame). The painting is in excellent condition, possibly previously cleaned/conserved. The frame appears original, with the same degree of oxidation across the stretchers and frame back.
Frame measurement is 29.75\" height, 25.5\" width, 2.75\" frame depth. The painting out of the frame measures 24\" x 20\". The frame is likely original, with the same degree of oxidation across the stretchers and frame. Fine quality, crisply cast gesso details of floral garlands and cross hatched backgrounds with parcel gilt liner frame. The frame is in excellent condition with minor gesso loss as shown.
Frans Hals (c. 1582–1666) was a Dutch Golden Age painter celebrated for his revolutionary, loose brushwork and intimate realism. As a master of Baroque portraiture, he broke from tradition by creating lively, candid, and often smiling figures, using rapid, broad strokes that prefigured Impressionism.
