This is a magnificent Japanese antique hanging scroll (Kakejiku) delicately hand-painted with sumi ink on silk, portraying an ancient pine tree embodying eternal vitality by pioneering female literati painter Kagai Hatano (波多野花涯), complete with its wooden storage box.

Condition: This scroll is in beautiful antique condition with only faint, natural signs of age and minor surface stains/toning consistent with an authentic Meiji to Taisho period silk scroll. The intricate brushwork of the pine needles and the dynamic ink tones of the gnarled trunk remain crisp, vibrant, and well-preserved. The wooden storage box shows gentle natural wood grain and age patina. Please inspect all photos carefully for detailed condition. Description: This refined literati artwork was painted by Kagai Hatano (波多野花涯) (1863–1944), an eminent and pioneering professional female Nanga (Bunjinga) painter born in Osaka. As a member of the historic first graduating class of the Atomi School under Kakei Atomi, Hatano went on to study classical ink painting under renowned masters Katei Taki (瀧和) and Kinseki Mori (森琴石), gaining high recognition at national exhibitions. Titled "Shoju Sennen-zu (松寿千年図)" (Pine Tree of Thousand Years Longevity), this painting portrays a majestic, twisting pine branch rendered with extraordinary delicacy and feminine grace. In Japanese tradition and Zen philosophy, the evergreen pine (Matsu) is a supreme symbol of endurance, steadfast virtue, and unfading longevity, thriving undaunted through harsh winters. The classical phrase "Shoju Sennen (松寿千年)" celebrates eternal vitality, peace, and unshakeable prosperity.
