This is a delightful and poetic Japanese antique hanging scroll (Kakejiku) delicately hand-painted with expressive ink and soft color tones on paper, portraying a charming small bird perched on an autumn chestnut branch by Edo period Shijo school master Seiki Yokoyama (横山清暉), housed in its wooden storage box.

Condition: There are visible signs of age, including natural surface toning and gentle antique patina consistent with an authentic Edo-period paper scroll. The delicate brushwork of the varied tit bird with its fine feather detailing, the spiky chestnut burrs, and the dynamic leaves remain vivid, crisp, and beautifully preserved. Description: This charming nature painting was brushed by Seiki Yokoyama (横山清暉) (1792–1864), an eminent master of the Kyoto-based Shijo School during the late Edo period. A distinguished pupil of Keibun Matsumura (松村景文), Yokoyama became renowned alongside Raisho Nakajima (中島来章), Renzan Kishi (岸連山), and Bunrin Shiokawa (塩川文麟) as one of the elite "Four Famous Masters of Heian (Kyoto)." Especially celebrated for his naturalistic bird-and-flower paintings (Kacho-ga), he executed sliding door paintings for Higashi Honganji temple and served as painter to Prince Soncho of Shoren-in temple. Titled "Shuriju ni Shokin-zu (秋栗樹に小禽図)" (Chestnut Tree with Small Bird), this artwork depicts an endearing varied tit (Yamagara) perched quietly on a branch laden with ripening chestnuts whose prickly husks have begun to split open. In Japanese cultural tradition, chestnuts (Kuri 栗) symbolize abundance, successful harvest, and auspicious victory ("Kachi-guri 勝ち栗"), while the peaceful small bird represents domestic serenity and joyful harmony with nature. Rendered with lively ink strokes and refined texturing on paper, this slender hanging scroll brings an aura of seasonal autumn warmth and traditional Japanese lyricism to any living space. Its compact width makes it an ideal centerpiece for a tea ceremony alcove, private study, or modern interior wall. The lower right bears the artist's signature "清暉 (Seiki)" alongside his authentic red seal stamp.
