Fascinating Turn-of-the-Century "Trompe-l'œil" Antique Desktop Collectible
Up for sale is an incredibly unique, genuine late-Victorian / Edwardian era novelty desk thermometer intricately cast in solid brass to look exactly like a pair of ornate scissors.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was highly fashionable to disguise functional instruments as everyday objects. This heavy brass piece features beautifully detailed, stylized Art Nouveau scrollwork and foliage on the handles. The front blade houses an early bimetallic temperature gauge plate with fine calibration markings still clearly visible (including 100, 110, and 120 lines)
This is a phenomenal conversation piece, perfect for collectors of antique scientific instruments, Victorian writing desk decor, or cabinet of curiosities enthusiasts!
Sold strictly as a non-working, decorative historical object. The delicate internal bimetallic mechanism has seized over the last 110+ years due to natural metal fatigue, and the tiny original indicator needle is no longer present.
