Antique Our Country A Household History 1st edition 3 volume set by Benson J. Lossing published by Johnson, Wilson & Company in 1875 (volume 1) and 1877 (volumes 2 & 3). The 3-volume set is leather bound and has some minor wear on the covers, a limited amount of foxing, no writing or inscription and no writing found by a spot check of the pages. The volumes are 10" by 8" with 1,866 numbered pages and over 500 illustrations. Please view all the pictures for more information.
Volume I begins in chapter 1 with the extent and character of our country, the navigation of Eric the Red and the Norwegians in 1002 with a complete description and characterization of the Indians. This volume finishes in chapter 23 with the French & Indian War and the struggles of Chief Pontiac.Volume II begins with the Accession of King George III, England's designs against the Americans. Prime Minister William Pitt the political natures of both America and England, takes us through the Revolutionary War and the creation of our government and finally end with Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase and the Battle of Tippecanoe.Volume III continues with the events preceding the the War of 1812, takes us completely through that warj, then the years leading up to the Civil War and its aftermath, continues with the ending of the Indian Wars in the 1870s. At the end of Volume III are supplements including; The Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, The Constitution and George Washington's farewell address.
Benson John Lossing (February 12, 1813 – June 3, 1891) was an American historian, known best for his illustrated books on the American Revolution and the American Civil War. He was a charter trustee of Vassar College.Lossing's significance as a historian derives from his diligence in seeking out primary records, his interviews with participants of events and intimates of his biographical subjects, and his care to weigh and contrast details of his various sources. Although such efforts are today a standard among historians, in Lossing's time they were not. Historiography was not yet a discipline. Washington Irving, with whom he corresponded, wrote, "I have been gratified at finding how scrupulously attentive you have been to accuracy to facts, which is so essential in writings of an historical nature." This made him an essential secondary source for contemporary and succeeding historians and enough of an institution for Theodore Roosevelt in his "Naval War of 1812" to adduce simply "Lossing" in stating a fact, in the same manner as historians use the figure "Gibbons".
