Pair of antique W.D. Henderson Chicago golf “Goat” competition medals/tokens featuring an unusual early golf design.Each medal depicts a large horned goat standing immediately in front of a golf ball while a foursome of golfers and caddies looks on in the background. The lower edge is maker marked “W.D. Henderson Chicago Ill.”The reverse features early golf equipment surrounding a large rectangular blank cartouche. Both cartouches remain unengraved.
This distinctive goat-and-golfers design is documented as a stock medal design produced by W.D. Henderson of Chicago for golf clubs; a documented example was struck for Calgary Golf & Country Club. “Goat” competitions became a feature of early-20th-century golf club culture, with medal holders challenging other holders in match play and the winner taking the opponent\'s goat medal. The game is documented at Nassau Country Club by 1911.This listing is for the two darker-patinated examples shown.
