Antique Prescott I.X.L. Carriage Wagon Jack Pat. 1878 Wood Iron 27\" For Sale

Antique Prescott I.X.L. carriage or wagon jack, constructed of heavy cast and forged iron components with substantial hardwood framing and operating handle.

This early mechanical jack was designed to lift the axle of a horse-drawn carriage or wagon so that a wheel could be removed or serviced. The stepped cast-iron lifting head provides several height positions, while the long wooden lever operates the lifting mechanism.

The casting is marked with a patent date that appears to read:

PAT\'D AUG. 27, 1878

This style of jack is associated with Edwin Prescott and the Prescott I.X.L. line of carriage and wagon jacks produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The jack retains its stepped cast-iron lifting head, long wooden lever, vertical wooden members, iron linkage and hardware, and original-style wooden base.

Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear consistent with a working tool of this period. The iron has an aged dark surface with oxidation, scattered rust, wear, and remnants of old paint. The wood shows scratches, staining, abrasions, checking, and other signs of long use.

There is a visible lengthwise age split/check in the wooden operating handle, as shown in the close-up photographs. The jack has not been refinished or restored and retains an appealing old working surface and patina.
