A wonderful teddy bear by the French maker FADAP, dating from circa 1920s-1940s, offered in excellent condition for his age.
About FADAP:
FADAP (Fabrique Artistique d\'Animaux en Peluche) was a French soft toy manufacturer founded in 1920 and based in Divonne-les-Bains, near the Swiss border. The company began producing teddy bears in 1925, and continued production through the interwar years and beyond, closing its doors in the 1970s. FADAP bears of this early period are recognised today by their upturned noses and a distinctive seam under the chin.
He stands 50cm in height and measures 25cm across at his widest point (arm to arm). He is pin-jointed at the arms and legs, allowing him to sit and pose naturally. His body is stuffed with traditional wood wool (excelsior), giving him a lovely firm, old-fashioned weight and feel typical of teddy bears of this period.
His coat is a cinnamon-brown woven artificial silk (rayon) plush — a fibre made from reconstituted cellulose derived from wood, used in soft toy manufacture of this era. It shows attractive natural shading and a slightly longer pile that has softened beautifully with age. His face features glass eyes with an amber rim and black pupil, giving him warm, characterful expression, and his nose is worked in the traditional vertically-stitched style. His claw stitching to the paws and feet is fully original and remains in very good, clearly defined condition on all four limbs. He has the classic FADAP pads to his paws and feet.
He is shown wearing a broderie anglaise cotton and lace collar, included with the bear, but a later addition rather than original to him.
Condition:
Excellent condition for his age. Please note one small area of repair to one ear (see photos), which has been neatly addressed. Fur shows the expected gentle wear and flattening of a bear of this age, with no significant loss. Glass eyes intact and secure. All limb joints remain sturdy and functional. No odours. A lovely honest example that has clearly been well cared for and stored.
