Antique Victorian Burnt Bamboo Étagère, Chinoiserie Lacquer Shelves,1880 to 1900 For Sale

A striking three-tier étagère from the Aesthetic Movement era, featuring hand-scorched "tortoiseshell" bamboo in classic Anglo-Japanese style. Each of the three shelves is fitted with black lacquer panels hand-painted with birds and floral chinoiserie motifs in gilt and rust tones. The bentwood bamboo brackets and joinery are all intact and sturdy. Please note, given its age, there is flaking and loss to the lacquer finish on the top and bottom shelves, with some bare wood showing through, visible in photos. The bamboo frame itself shows only the natural mottling from the original scorching technique, no damage. A wonderful decorative piece and conversation starter, ready to display as is, or a fun project for someone wanting to stabilize the lacquer.
