Impressive antique Victorian cast-iron letter copying / book press, dating approximately to the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900.
This substantial antique press features a heavy arched cast-iron frame, large circular handwheel, massive threaded center screw and rectangular pressing platen. The old black painted finish retains attractive remnants of gold pinstriping, giving the press exceptional period industrial character.
Historically, presses of this type were commonly used as letter copying presses, applying pressure to transfer freshly written correspondence into copying books. Today, surviving examples are also collected and used as bookbinding presses, book presses, printmaking tools and antique industrial decor.

The handwheel turns and operates the threaded screw and pressing mechanism. The press remains solid and substantial.
The finish has intentionally been left in its aged state. Expected oxidation, paint loss, scratches, surface wear and discoloration are present and contribute to the authentic industrial patina. No major breaks or structural repairs observed.
