Circa 1885–1895
An exceptional late Victorian mourning mantle or dolman-style jacket featuring beautiful black silk, elaborate jet bead passementerie, and luxurious silk fringe throughout.
This is a wonderfully preserved example of Victorian mourning attire. The garment features a fitted back with intricate applied trim, matching decorative trim on the sleeves and hem, and a dramatic fringed collar. The interior reveals a combination of machine stitching with hand-finished construction, consistent with quality garments from the late nineteenth century.
The passementerie is embellished with faceted black jet-style beads, and the original covered buttons remain intact.
Please note that the garment is considerably darker black than it appears in my photographs. The camera brightened the fabric, making it appear gray. In person it reads as a rich black mourning garment.
Condition
Overall, this piece is in remarkably good antique condition for its age.
- Original silk fringe largely intact
- Beautiful original jet bead trim
- Original covered buttons present
- Interior lining intact
- Combination hand and machine construction
- Structurally very solid
There is a small area of light surface dirt/discoloration on the front (visible in the photographs). It appears to be surface grime and I believe would likely clean with appropriate conservation, but I have left the garment untouched so the next owner may decide how they wish to preserve it.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
A beautiful display piece for collectors of Victorian fashion, mourning attire, textile history, costume design, or Gothic décor.
