Up for your consideration is this exceptional and highly decorative vintage art glass sculpture of two deer / antelopes by István Komáromy (1910–1975), the renowned Hungarian-born British glass artist and master of lampwork glass sculpture.
Dating from approximately the 1950s, this wonderful sculptural group consists of two individually hand-formed animals permanently joined together in a beautifully balanced and animated composition. Deer and stag figures are among the documented subjects produced by Komáromy during his British period, including both individual animals and more elaborate figural groups. 20th Century Glass
The two animals are modelled in opaline white glass, each with an extraordinarily elegant elongated neck, extremely slender legs and dramatic sweeping white horns. Their contrasting black glass faces and applied ears give the figures a particularly striking appearance, while rows of individually applied deep burgundy / aubergine glass spots decorate their backs.
The composition is especially attractive because of the positioning of the animals. They appear to be moving together, almost dancing, with their long legs crossing and meeting at the centre. Viewed from different angles, the sculpture continually changes its appearance, creating a wonderful sense of movement and lightness.
The figures have been entirely hand worked at the flame using the lampwork technique, with the bodies, legs, horns, ears and decorative elements individually formed and joined while hot. The slight differences between the two animals and the irregularity of the applied spots clearly reveal the handmade nature of the sculpture.
Also visible within the opaline glass are characteristic internal inclusions, working lines and traces created during the forming and joining of the glass. These are inherent features of this type of handmade lampwork production and are particularly visible around some of the legs and body joints. Please see the detailed photographs.
The sculpture does not retain an original Komáromy label. This is not unusual for surviving examples, and documented Komáromy works are known both with and without labels. His deer and stag sculptures are well established within his body of work; documented examples include single deer as well as larger two-deer compositions.
The sculpture is beautifully preserved considering the exceptionally delicate nature of its construction. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition, as they form an important part of the description.
