Offering a W. & L. E. Gurley #100ReconnaissanceTransit, I believe.It has no serial number, so that would date the instrument manufacture to before 1908 (probably 1880-1908). This lighter weight Gurley transit (7 lbs) was designed to be carried into the field. It stands 10-3/4" tall to the top of the full-circle vernier and has a 8-3/4" long scope. The optics are good, and there is one vertical crosshair and three horizontal crosshairs. All bubbles are intact and working. The compass needle is intact (including the mechanism that locks it) and points north when unlocked.The compass needle is about 3-1/2" long. The silvered compass face is in good condition, as well, with the company name and location above the Fleur-de-Lis.All screws are working and in good order.The overall finish of natural brass is original (not brushed or cleaned) with a nice rich patina.Vernier scales and markings are in good order. This is a very nice example of a Gurley Transit.
The instrument comes with the original box. Inside is a brass lens hood and adjustment tools. The leather strap used to carry the box is largely missing.
The instrument could use some cleaning.
