Beautiful antique Victorian hand-cut glass jug/pitcher featuring an unusual thistle-form silhouette and exceptionally deep geometric diamond cutting. The jug has a distinctive bulbous center decorated with large, deeply cut intersecting diamond/trellis cuts. Above this is a finely cut transition band leading into a tall neck with long vertical mitre cuts. The piece is finished with a graceful applied loop handle and a beautifully shaped pouring spout. One of the nicest details is the underside, which features a finely wheel-cut radial starburst set into a very slightly recessed base. The construction is particularly interesting. The clear flared lower portion is relatively thin, while the glass becomes noticeably thicker through the heavily diamond-cut center where additional thickness was required to accommodate the deep cutting. The glass is also heavier around the worked pouring rim. This form and cutting style are consistent with fine British Victorian/Stourbridge cut-glass traditions of the late 19th to early 20th century. Similar thistle-form vessels were produced by important Stourbridge glasshouses including Richardson and Thomas Webb. This example is unsigned, and I am not attributing it to a specific manufacturer.Measurements:
8” high to top of pouring spout
8⅓” maximum overall height to top of handle
Approximately 4¼” maximum width
Weight: 0.86 lb / approximately 390 gramsNo maker’s mark or signature was found after careful examination. The cutting is exceptionally crisp and displays beautifully, particularly the large diamond-cut center and starburst underneath.Condition: Please review the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. This piece is in exceptional condition with no chips or cracks noted. Because the starburst is recessed, it has been protected from surface contact and is in beautiful condition. Normal minor evidence of age should be expected with antique glass.A beautiful and unusual piece of antique cut glass with an elegant sculptural form and excellent craftsmanship.
