ANTIQUE GOODELL COMPANY KNIVES & FORKS — 10-PIECEMATCHED SET — c. 1890s
Offered is a scarce antique American table cutlery setmanufactured by the Goodell Company of Antrim, New Hampshire, consistingof five table knives and five matching three-tine forks — 10 pieces total.
The knives bear the distinctive GOODELL COMPANY / ANTRIM,N.H. maker's trademark. Goodell was manufacturing table knives and forks inAntrim during the late nineteenth century; a period Goodell advertisement from1897 specifically lists “table knives and forks” among the company's cutleryproducts.
I believe this set dates to approximately the 1890s,based upon the Goodell marking, construction and overall form. I am selling itas circa 1890s rather than representing an exact year of manufacture.
The pieces have attractive textured natural-material handlescales, believed to be bone, secured by multiple pins/rivets, with metalend caps and bolsters. The knives have broad steel blades, while the forks havethe characteristic three-tine configuration seen on early table flatware.
IMPORTANT — CLEANED EXAMPLES
I gently cleaned only one knife and one fork.
These two pieces are shown in the photographs anddemonstrate how dramatically the metal and handles clean up. The other eightpieces have intentionally been left in their original aged condition.
I did this so that the next owner can decide whether topreserve the approximately century-old patina or clean the remaining pieces tomatch the two examples.
The cleaned pieces also provide an excellent comparisonshowing the underlying appearance of the set.
CONDITION
Antique, used condition with substantial age-relatedcharacter. The uncleaned pieces exhibit oxidation, tarnish, discoloration,staining, scratches, blade wear and accumulated patina consistent with oldcarbon-steel cutlery.
