Aug 1, 1855Brownsville TN Agricultural Bank of Tennessee $5 Note.
The Agricultural Bank was chartered as a free bank in 1854 and suspended in 1859. Its assets were purportedly purchased by A.J. Stevens and Co. and moved to Des Moines, IA, with notes also circulating in Racine and LaCrosse, WI, resulting in those place names being stamped on this $5 note. The note has three agriculturally themed vignettes, with Ceres floating in the air being featured.
This note appears to have been mounted in a scrapbook and has remnants of the page's thin black corner straps adhered to three of the four corners on the face in addition to a small diamond-shaped cancel to the left of Ceres.
