this item is a genuine antique or vintage mid-century piece, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century (1920s–1960s).
What the Back Reveals About Its Age
• The Casting Texture: The heavily pitted, rough, granular surface on the inside cavity is characteristic of vintage sand-casting. Modern reproductions use precision investment molding or die-casting, which leaves a much smoother or entirely uniform back.
• Oxidation and Aging: The dark, mottled brown coloration and the chalky white/light-green powdery residue in the rim crevices tells us it was mounted outdoors on a brick, stone, or wooden entryway for decades.
• Traces of Red Paint: The reddish-pink residue around the outer edges indicates it was once mounted on a door or wall that was painted red, with the hardware left in place during a repainting session.
• Hand-Drilled Threaded Bosses: The two thick, integrated mounting bumps (bosses) with hand-tapped screw threads are classic mid-century and earlier hardware construction.
Adjusting the Value
Because its vintage pedigree and authentic weathering are now clear, the value shifts solidly into the $180 to $300 bracket for architectural salvage collectors or vintage dog hardware enthusiasts.
