This remarkable chair was acquired directly from a Peace Corps volunteer who served in Cameroon in 2001. According to the original owner, it was commissioned and hand carved by village artisans before being brought back to the United States.
Unlike mass-produced reproductions, this chair is constructed from two interlocking solid hardwood pieces, allowing it to assemble without hardware while making transportation remarkably easy.
The backrest features an intricate relief carving of a male and female figure standing beneath a large tree, a scene often associated with family, community, and village life in traditional African art. Additional geometric carvings decorate the seat, base, and borders, showcasing the artisan’s skill.
Whether displayed in a living room, library, office, gallery, or collected as ethnographic art, this is a substantial statement piece.
