BILL WIRTZ & ARTHUR WIRTZ SIGNED 1962 CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS BUSINESS CHECK – BECKETT AUTHENTICATED
They’re actually important names in Chicago sports history, and they were father and son.
Arthur Wirtz (1901–1983) was the patriarch of the Wirtz sports/business dynasty. He built a major Chicago business empire involving real estate, arenas and entertainment, became an owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and served as the team’s president. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971. Most importantly for your check, Arthur was running the Blackhawks when they won the 1961 Stanley Cup, only about a year before this March 1962 check was issued.
Bill Wirtz (1929–2007) was Arthur’s son. He became deeply involved with the Blackhawks after college, eventually becoming team president and later controlling owner after Arthur died. He also served as chairman of the NHL Board of Governors and was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. His son was Rocky Wirtz, who later ran the Blackhawks during their 2010, 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup championships.
So what you have isn’t simply two random businessmen’s autographs. It’s a 1962 Chicago Blackhawks team check signed by two generations of the Wirtz ownership family, immediately following the Blackhawks’ 1961 Stanley Cup championship, and Beckett has authenticated and encapsulated it.
